Grey Sri Lanka | Sri Lanka Apparel | Garments Without Guilt
|
In the 60s, feminists in the West burnt their bras - in Sri Lanka today, they're making them.
Garment manufacturing in Sri Lanka accounts for an astonishing 45% of the country's export revenue. It is also the largest single employer
of women. As the industry has grown, it has been mindful of avoiding the 'sweatshop' image consistent with some Asian countries.
Sri Lanka Apparel is the result. An industry initiative, it is committed to ethical working conditions. Women's empowerment became the
core of the project - linked to rural poverty alleviation, the creation of education opportunities, and an environmental awareness programme.
Grey used the idea of 'Garments without Guilt' to communicate the organisation's successes. It received positive press worldwide - particularly
in America and Europe. In fact, Marks & Spencer went as far as creating its first 100% environmentally friendly factory in Sri Lanka.
'Made in Sri Lanka' now means made with pride. |
