Behind The Scenes: Color Strategy with Jack Bredenfoerder
Landor’s design director offers his tips on the color trends for 2010
Thinking about the role of color in branding and design, Landor turned to the company’s in-house expert. Cincinnati design director Jack Bredenfoerder is recognized internationally as a color authority, specializing in color strategy, trends, and forecasting. He has been featured on HGTV and in leading business, consumer, and design publications such as the Financial Times, Communication Arts, AdvertisingAge, I.D. magazine, and the New Yorker. He also recently served as president of the Color Marketing Group, the premier international association for color design professionals.
Let’s start with the question everyone wants to hear: What are some color trends and directions we should expect to see in 2010?
In a major shift away from the cautious neutrals, grays, browns, and blacks we saw in 2009, here is what we should expect to see throughout 2010:
- A revival of International Klein Blue, which relates to people’s search for a global, let’s-work-together unifying color; it represents not only the environmental challenges we must solve together but also the social and political ones.
- White, which reflects a desire to simplify and clear the palette in an uncertain economy.
- Warm golden yellows, which are linked to a desire for the stability of a new gold standard.
